SUBSTIWOOD^® PRECAST POST FOUNDATIONS

Precast Post Foundations

SUBSTIWOOD^® precast piers make the job of installing your fence and deck posts much easier. These units are made with patented fiber-reinforced concrete (half the weight of normal concrete). No more mixing and transporting concrete on the job site. The top surface includes a built-in threaded insert to receive your post hardware. Special handles on the sides make picking them up easier. Place these units in the dug post holes, level the top, and backfill. We recommend that at least a 4-in layer of sand be placed at the bottom of the hole so that the pier rests on sand. Unlike the poured-in-place option, you don’t need to wait for setting and curing of concrete. You choose the height of these units based on your local frost depth. Two types of piers are available: straight and belled. The choice of straight versus belled base depends on your local requirements, load level on the post, and soil conditions. Standard units come in 4-ft lengths and weigh about 120 lbs.

These piers have a constant cross section of 7” square and are 4 feet tall. There is a threaded insert at the top surface for attachment of support hardware. A post-hole diameter of at least 8 inches is required. The cross sectional area is approximately 47 in².

Belled Post Foundations

These piers have a constant cross section of 7” square for the top 3 ft, but the section gradually increases to an 11-in square (with chamfered corners) in the bottom 1-ft of the base. The total height is 4 feet tall (shorter piers can also be ordered). There is a threaded insert at the top surface for attachment of support hardware. A post-hole diameter of at least 12 inches is required. The cross sectional area on the bottom is approximately 100 in².

Precast Footings

SUBSTIWOOD^® precast footings can be used to support posts, beams, or joists. However, as in other post foundations, they should not be used in frost areas unless frost heaving is not a concern. Also, settlement can be an issue unless these are placed directly on rock.

Special Fence Post Foundation

SUBSTIWOOD^® precast fence post foundations are designed for improved resistance to storm wind forced. The side faces are roughened to increase friction and the increased dimension at the bottom help against pullout forces. A threaded insert is available at the top surface.
